Q&A Interview with Melanie's Muses

Where are you from?

I am originally from Rochester, England but I moved to Rochester, New York to be with my husband about 20 years ago.

How long have you been cosplaying?

My first proper cosplay was probably for the #DressLikeADemon contest in 2016 that Lesley-Ann Brandt hosted to promote Lucifer and then I won a signed picture from her. Everything escalated from there.

How did you first become interested in cosplay?

I've always been fascinated with dressing up but with vlogging, and then after the Lucifer contest it kind of took on a life of its own. I've always been a bit different and cosplay really lets you explore that.

What are some characters you have cosplayed?

Maze from Lucifer, River Song from Doctor Who, The "Posessed" Linda from Witchboard (which is one of my personal favorites), Stahma Tarr from the TV show Defiance, Several of the characters from the new Sandman series on Netflix, Keeley Jones from Ted Lasso .... honestly there are so many, and I take requests from my fans so LOTS have stemmed from there. I showcase new ones almost every Sunday on my Melanie's Muses Facebook live show!

What are some of your future cosplay plans?

I am debuting a new one at FC3 which I am really excited about. It's the first one that I have had custom armor made for and relates to a new book series from Author Susan Harris. I am also working on a fan-requested Pam from True Blood (when she is cursed and half rotting).

What is the most time consuming part of creating a cosplay?

The most time consuming part is usually deciding how I want to interpret them if it’s a specific person, or what look I’m going for if it’s an original character.  Things also often then to change as I start working on them too. I usually try and pick a vibe, or with characters what I connect with about them, and then go from there.

What is your biggest cosplay pet peeve?

When people make negative comments about how the characters might not exactly match the original. If you love a character then you should go for it and interpret it YOUR way. If people don't like it they should mind their own business. Cosplay is an escape and everyone should be welcome to enjoy it!

Favorite movie? Video game? TV show? Band?

Movie -  True Romance  Video Game - Bloody Roar 3  TV Show - Salem   Band - HIM

Outside of cosplay, what are some of your other hobbies?

Reading, I watch a TON of TV and weird obscure movies. Oh and collecting Funko Pops - they are literally taking over the house at this point!

Q&A interview with Harley Nox Cosplay

Where are you from?

I was originally born in Cincinnati, but I moved to the East Coast when I was little. I've bounced around from place to place but I've called the Danbury area of Connecticut my home for the last few years.

How long have you been cosplaying?

I've been cosplaying since 2012! I went to my first convention that year and I was hooked.

How did you first become interested in cosplay?

I first became interested about a month before my first convention. I had always been a huge Halloween costume fan, but my best friend had gotten tickets to New York Comic Con and invited me along with him. I knew right then and there I had to dress up - he had told me that he was going to and I should too. I was hooked from that point on.

What are some characters you have cosplayed?

There's a lot of them! I've done several versions of Belle from Beauty and the Beast; I've done my own version of Beetlejuice; a bunch of different versions of Harley Quinn (including several original versions); I've done anime characters like Lucy Heartfilia and Moka Akashiya, and most recently I added Samus Aran's Zero Suit and a new Vault Suit (from Fallout) to my line of cosplays - that's not including what I'm working on for this year's NYCC! Obviously this isn't an exhaustive list, as I have cosplays that aren't mentioned here, but I have... a lot of them!

What are some of your future cosplay plans?

I'd love to finally get around to building Princess Aurora's dress (boy, do I have ideas for that), and I'd love to build Gideon (Diane's Sacred Treasure) from the Seven Deadly Sins anime. If you know me at all, you know that I (legitimately) have a seven page, single spaced list of cosplays I want to do! The list continuously grows, too, so... maybe I'll get to the end one day.

What is your biggest cosplay pet peeve?

I have two: the first is when people say that they made an item when they commissioned it, especially when they're competing, and the second is when people say that cosplayers "aren't real cosplayers" because they purchase or thrift their cosplays. Cosplay is cosplay! If you have a cosplay, congratulations, you're a cosplayer.

Favorite movie? Video game? TV show? Band?

Rapid fire answers: Beetlejuice/The Princess Bride, the entire Fallout series of video games (most likely, if I had to pick a favorite, it would be Fallout: New Vegas), Seinfeld, and All Time Low.

Outside of cosplay, what are some of your other hobbies?

I actually have a minor in musical theatre, so when I'm not crafting, I sing and watch musicals. I also love to collect fan art and collectible statues, and I like reading comics and graphic novels when I can get my hands on them.

Most of the time I choose to craft though - it's the one thing that I can do and shut out the rest of the world. I run an Etsy shop (outside of my regular, mundane job), so if I'm not crafting for cosplay, I'm crafting for that.

Q&A interview with Scarlett Schwendinger

Where are you from?

I'm from a little state in Austria. I was born there but lived in Germany for a few years.

When did you start cosplaying?

I started cosplaying three years ago and made my first complete self-made cosplay about two years ago.

How did you first become interest in cosplay as a hobby?

I was very interested in cosplaying when I was a pre-teen because I saw a documentary about it and as a really big anime lover it was like a dream hobby. Sadly I wasn't confident enough to begin cosplay and was kinda lost with how to start. Around 2018 my fiancé showed me some different online shops where I can buy wigs and cosplay, that's how his suffering started

What are some characters you have cosplayed?

Recently I cosplayed Raiden Shogun from Genshin Impact and visited a convention in Germany. The feedback was amazing and wonderful.

But I also cosplayed Ahri,Rakan, Nero, Tamamo, Yae Miko and way more characters from those games. Honestly I don't remember every character I have cosplayed because it is something over 200.

What are your plans for your next cosplay?

My next cosplay will be Yoimiya from Genshin Impact with the doggo Taroumaru! So my little Shiba Inu will also get a cosplay to wear. I already finished the wig and the cos, the only thing left is the coat for the dog.

Do you have any cosplay pet peeves?

Oh one of my biggest pet peeve as a cosplayer is taking pictures of me without asking and making fun of me! I also really don't like the sewing because I never learned it and sometimes I need to cut the seam and start again.

Funnily enough, seam-patterns are kinda simple to make and relaxing.

Favorite movie? Video Game? TV show? Band?

That's a hard decision, they are so many movies I really love! Most of the Ghibli films are amazing and I re-watch them every year, but I also like horror movies or movies about ghosts, Halloween etc.

My favorite game at the moment is Genshin Impact. It is really relaxing and non-time consuming which is perfect as a cosplayer.

Outside of cosplay, what are some of your other hobbies?
I like being creative! When I have free-time I spend it reading books or watching anime. But I also do stuff like making animal ears for cosplaying

Q&A Interview with cosplayer Jon Poli

Where are you from?

I was born and raised in Syracuse, New York.

How long have you been cosplaying?

I made my first costume in 2007.

What first got you interested in cosplay?

I've always liked dressing up for Halloween and once I learned that people dress up for conventions I felt drawn in 2007.

What are some characters you have cosplayed?

I've done Nightwing, Robin, Gotham City Police Officer, and a Ghostbuster.

Working on anything now?

I want to do a new Nightwing costume doing more hands-on processes rather than buying pre-fabricated items like vests and all.

Which cosplay took you the longest / most effort to put together?

I would have to say that the Robin took the longest because of how long it took to paint the vest and I had to out source the cape because I lack the skills for sewing.

Favorite movie? Video game? TV show? Band?

My favorite movie is Ghostbusters 2. I don't really have a favorite video game. Titans is my favorite show that's currently running and my favorite band is Linkin Park.

What are some of your other hobbies outside of cosplay?

I play Magic the Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh!, read and collect comic books and action figures and I'm a paranormal investigator.

What kind of decks do you have for MTG & Yu-Gi-Oh?

In Magic I primarily run a Vampire deck and in Yu-Gi-Oh I usually main a spellcaster deck with a focus on the Dark Magician.

What are some of the conventions that you have attended? What's the furthest one away you've ever been to?

I've been to a very small local con in Baldwinsville, Salt City Comic Con in Syracuse, Flower City Comic Con in Rochester, Nickel City Comic Con in Buffalo, and Niagara Falls Comic Con in Niagara Falls Canada. Niagara Falls has been the farthest one I've been to and I usually make it a weekend trip of it.

Q&A Interview with Refeen

Where are you from?

I'm from Indonesia, but I am multilingual so I like to make friends with everyone.

How long have you been cosplaying?

I've been cosplaying since 2016.

How did you first become interested in the hobby?

Because I like watching anime since I was a kid so I tried to be the characters that I like.

What are some characters that you have cosplayed?

I've cosplayed a lot of characters but my top three favorites are Sakura Matou, Makima, and Ichika Nakano

What are some of your future cosplay plans?

I'm thinking about doing cosplay of Angel from King of Fighters and Vivy from Vivys Fluorite Eye Song.

What's your biggest cosplay pet peeve?

I don't like it when the costume is too big so I usually commissioned my cosplay costume with my own personal measurements.

Favorite movie? Video game? TV show? Band?

Favorite movie as in anime movie or regular movie? If it's anime movie then I'll choose Fate/Stay Night: Heaven's Feel. If you mean a regular movie then it's La La Land.

My favorite video game is Tekken!

I don't really watch TV... but my favorite band is Queen! As for singer I like Aimer.

Since you have done so many cosplayers, which one do you think was the most challenging to do and why?

I think it's my Jeanne Alter ascension 1 from FGO! because of the heavy armor and setting of the theme.

Any advice for someone who might just be starting out in the hobby?

My advice is that please believe in yourself, be confident and enjoy your hobby to the fullest! We're here to have fun anyway.

Outside of cosplay, what are some of your other hobbies?

I like to sing and reading manga.

Q&A interview with Kate Key Cosplay

Where are you from?

I am from Zaragoza, Spain!

How long have you been cosplaying?

I started out very young, about 10 years ago. It has been 10 years of fun at events, photo shoots, conventions, and it was hard too in a lot of different ways! Cosplay has marked my whole life.

How did you first become interested in the hobby?

Well, it started in a fairly simple, but powerful way. As a young girl, I was browsing YouTube when suddenly I came across a video of Sakura-Con. I was absolutely amazed. Those people looked like, no, WERE my favorite video game and anime characters! In my country there was nothing like that, and I was totally amazed by what I saw. I also wanted to be there, and not only that, I also wanted to BE one of my favorite characters. That day, going to Sakura-Con with a cosplay became one of my dreams. Then more have been added, haha. And that's how it all started!

What are some characters that you have cosplayed?

It's funny, I was recently asked the same question on Instagram, but with the letters of the alphabet. And I realized that I have at least one cosplay for each letter. And it's not even close to the real number, which I don't even know. Maybe more than 100?

What are some of your future cosplay plans?

Well, I have to say that this information is confidential. But because it's you, I could tell you that summer is coming in my country, and that I like DVA and Esdeath so much. Let's see what happens!

What's your biggest cosplay pet peeve?

I believe I don't have many! Just starting with "the hardest" part. Because if the most difficult part looks bad when I will finish it, the rest of the cosplay probably too. Usually are helmets or breast armors.

Any advice for someone who might just be starting out in the hobby?

Yeah! Do whatever you want and enjoy it! Be logical with your projects, don't try to start with a really hard huge cosplay but if you love a character, style, or just the costume... do it and have fun! Make it, buy it, go conventions or just for photos at home. Cosplay is different for each person and no matter what other people can say to you about that, enjoy the cosplay world as you want.

Favorite movie? Video game? TV show? Band?

Very difficult! My favorite saga is Underworld, but I can't choose only one because all of them are amazing! Dark and vampire vibes are my life hehe. About videogame definitely Zelda's saga is the best for me, maybe Twilight Princess is my favorite there because I love Midna, but Phantom Hourglass is great too! The first game I ever played.

I love many shows like Big Bang Theory and Modern Family...and I can't choose a band, but I love rock, metal, techno and dubstep so much!

Outside of cosplay, what are some of your other hobbies?

I really like video games and anime. I love going out to restaurants, cinema... I guess like any girl. I also really like nature and having outdoor adventures. And of course, traveling! My BIGGEST dream is travel to Japan. And when I'm not cosplaying, I like to box!

Q&A Interview with Amani Cosplay

Where are you from?

Nowhere fancy. I grew up in a small farm town of Sibley, Iowa. I migrated up north and am currently living in South Saint Paul, Minnesota.

When did you start cosplaying?

Tricky question to answer.  I discovered cosplay back in 2007 but never picked up the craft until 2009 (I was afraid of major judgement from my peers). So, I cosplayed I'd say for a year in 2009-2010 but stopped due to wanting to focus on college. In 2013, I got the opportunity to go to my very first convention so I panicked and bought a cosplay and picked the hobby back up!

How did you first become interested in cosplay?

Back in 2007 due to my sister introducing me to some hilarious Youtubers that went by the name Fighting Dreamers.

What are some characters that you have cosplayed?

Oh boy let's see...I'll keep it short but I have cosplayed Panty from Panty and Stocking, Tia Halibel from Bleach, lots of League of Legends cosplays, Uraraka from My Hero Academia, and Zach Fischer's design of Alexstrasza from World of Warcraft.

What are your plans for your next cosplay?

My next cosplay (currently working on) is Goblin Slayer and a female version of him. The regular version will be worn by my husband.

Do you have any cosplay pet peeves?

My cosplay pet peeve is this: people (and not just cosplayers) that believe "if you don't make your own cosplay, you're not a true cosplayer!" No. Cosplay is Cosplay!

Not everyone has the time to invest in making their own cosplay from scratch. Everyone can cosplay and everybody can cosplay. Race, gender, and the means of getting your cosplay does not matter.

Cosplay is about showing your love for the fandom, the character, meeting awesome people, and having fun!

Favorite movie? Video game? TV show? Band?

Movie: Princess Mononoke.

Video Game: Legend of Dragoon - I love this game! My dream cosplay is to cosplay one of the Dragoon forms (this will be really tough).

TV Show: Hmm....I don't watch a lot of TV anymore due to streaming services like Netflix. Does anime count? Haha if that is the case then I love Wolf's Rain, Fruits Basket, Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop. Just to name a few favorites.

Band: Does a fictional band count? If so, Riot Games Pentakill and K/DA are my favorite bands.

What is Cosplay Kittens?

Cosplay Kittens is an idea me and my friend decided on based on that we like kittens and the members of ours group (husbands, family etc.) all got nicknames after cats we think we associate with. For example: I was going by Munchkin since I'm really short. Unfortunately, not much else to say at this time but we hope to pick things back up with our group!

What advice would you give to people who are thinking about getting into cosplay but haven't yet?

So many things I could say! But something simple: my advice is just be yourself and cosplay whomever you want! I know it can be disheartening sometimes wanting to do a cosplay then a well known cosplayer does the same cosplay and you think to yourself "wow that's amazing...I can never be that good." Stop that thinking! Is this a character you love and always wanted to cosplay? Then just do it!

What is the furthest you have ever traveled for a convention?

The furthest I traveled was to Kansas (roughly nine hours from me) back in.....shoot can't remember but I decided that was too far for a car ride (it was split up in two days because I met up with friends). So currently the furthest I've gone (and keep going) is a big convention in Omaha Nebraska called Anime Nebraskon - this convention was the very first one I ever went too and I love it! That is a five to six hour drive.

Outside of cosplay, what are some of your other hobbies?

Playing a variety of video games and watching anime! Also, I love to swim! I don't think that is considered a hobby but pre-COVID I used to go to beaches with my friends.

Q&A Interview with Celeste Orchid

Credit: Chris Floro

Where are you from?

I am from the USA. Slightly a blend of Midwest, South, and West Coast SoCal life. Currently I reside in Copenhagen, Denmark.

When did you start cosplaying?

I started cosplaying in 2005; definitely was a different age and style of cosplaying back then.

How did you first become interested in cosplay?

I became interested in cosplay when my high school classmates brought a magazine called NewType to school. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. In the magazine they had a section called "Cosplay". I believe it was the issue where they featured Yaya Han and her Fire Fairy costume and it was so inspiring. I have always wanted to try to make my own clothes but never decided on attempting to make costumes.

What are some characters that you have cosplayed?

I've cosplayed a lot of characters since 2005. Some of my personal favorites are Anarchy Panty from Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, C2 (C.C.) from Code Geass, a multitude of League of Legends characters, and Chun Li from Street Fighter.

Who would you say is your favorite LoL champ to main?

Oh lord. This is definitely a hard question to answer as I love to play multiple champions. I would dare say that my favorite is Heimerdinger. Small, smart, and sassy.

What are your plans for your next cosplay?

Credit: Chris Floro

I definitely have a lot of plans for cosplays; some of them being Seraphine's All Out KDA skin and Default costume, Eliza from Tekken, a throwback costume of Freya from Chobits, and a few Smash Ultimate characters.

Do you have any cosplay pet peeves?

One of my biggest pet peeves of cosplaying is GATE KEEPING. It truly grinds my gears when people tell others that they should or should not cosplay, whether they are copying someone, stealing their ideas, or calling others copycats. Cosplaying is definitely a "copy" of someone else's work. The way you create it is your own and your interpretation; however, as a creator/cosplayer, we do not own the rights to commercial Intellectual Properties. So in essence if you create your own character that's a bit more like Live Action Role Playing (LARPing). If you create a series and a whole universe like J.K. Rowling and cosplay as that character from a created universe, then that's a different issue.

In no way shape or form am I downplaying LARPing, original characters can hail from any series or genre. It can be a form of cosplaying which I don't think they're mutually exclusive. Here's to hoping that more entrants to cosplay will just do it for the cosplay and not for the fame.

How do you think cosplay as a hobby has evolved since you started back in 2005 and do you think it's headed in the right or wrong direction?

Cosplay has evolved to be more available to the public. We have better access to high quality costumes and wigs just in case you're not crafty. There's such a bigger scene for cosplaying and it's not so frowned upon. With any advancement there will be both good and bad. There will always be those who frown upon sexier costumes and there will always be those who have too strong of an opinion on others' costumes. As long as people are enjoying the hobby of cosplaying without hurting others; physical or mental, it'll be in a good direction.

Do you have any tips for someone who wants to get started into cosplaying but might be hesitant?

Cosplay characters that you love: whether it's the design or the actual character. It never feels good to wear clothes or makeup that you dislike.

Don't worry about your real skin color for accuracy. Make the clothes accurate if that's your thing but don't paint yourself another human color. Definitely DO NOT paint yourself black or brown as that's very frowned upon.

Credit: Chris Floro

Cosplay does not matter what gender you are. At the end of the day, they're clothes, wigs, and crafted pieces put together. If you're wanting to cosplay as someone that's not your gender, go for it. Don't be limited by gender.

Research both your materials, and your places where you purchase your costumes/materials. Sometimes you don't want to support a company if it goes against your morals.

Join cosplay groups and don't be afraid to ask questions. Everyone's learning about cosplay or buying them.

Everyone starts somewhere, so go for it!

Is it an expensive hobby? Can it be done on a budget?

Cosplay can be an expensive hobby. Is L from Death Note needing a crazy amount of work? No not really. Making costumes can be expensive as opposed to buying a costume. Keep in mind with crafting you pay for your mistakes as well.

I definitely think it can be done on a budget. There are shortcuts where you can keep it cheap. I know that some people like to do arduinos, 3d printing, and vacuum forming; these can completely be expensive but pay off really well.

Highly recommend investing in a good cutting matt and cutting tools will really stretch the budget and last a long time.

Favorite movie? Video game? TV show? Band?

I definitely have a wide variety of favorite movies. It's a tough call, but my favorite movie of all time is House of Flying Daggers. I loved it for the story, costume design, and the romance. There was a lot to it that others will dislike but it's definitely timeless for me. A close second is Jim Henson's Labyrinth; how can you not love young Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie? And that ballroom scene? It was such a fantasy!

My favorite video game of all time is Tetris. Timeless and classic. I think there's a trend with things that I love.

Credit: Martin SquareNoodles
My favorite TV Show has got to be Courage the Cowardly Dog show. I think this was the first real introduction to dark comedic horror as a child. There was something more sinister and scary about Courage the Cowardly Dog as opposed to Scooby-Doo. I think it was more along the lines of a tiny dog that was powerless and alone that always had to get the job done and save his home.

My favorite band, this is a tough one. I'm terrible with music and remembering their names but I'm definitely into Baby Metal. I got to see them live before Yui-Metal left the band. I loved the Pussycat Dolls, I haven't heard their newer music but still a fan of their earlier works.

I love pop EDM artists too. Main favorites are Zedd and Calvin Harris. My brother looks a bit like Steve Aoki, and that got me into his music a bit as well.

Outside of cosplay, what are some of your other hobbies?

Outside of cosplaying I love playing with my bulldog and playing video games  I enjoy travelling but with covid that's kinda taken a backseat. I'm hoping that we will be able to go to theme parks again once the lockdown has been lifted. With a lot of countries still closed, I guess I'll throw it back into fashion, video games and cosplaying.

Q&A Interview with YazBae

Where are you from?

Wales!

When did you start cosplaying?

About two year ago properly, but I had dabbled in it a bit before that.

How did you first become interested in cosplay?

I honestly just wanted to be cool characters in real life and cosplay was the perfect excuse, haha.

What are some characters that you have cosplayed?

Spirit Blossom Kindred, Jinx, Yumeko Jabami and Levi Ackerman which was a big step out of my comfort zone as I'd never cosplayed a masculine character before that.

What are your plans for your next cosplay?

Attack on Titan Season 4 uniform Hange and I'm in the process of making the new champion Gwen from League of Legends.

Do you have any cosplay pet peeves?

I honestly just hate sanding things. It takes forever and I'm super impatient so it's a struggle sometimes haha.

Favorite movie? Video game? TV show? Band?

Attack on Titan is my favorite anime/manga. I also adore Junji Ito's works. Favorite games are the Danganronpa series and FFXIV and my favorite band is Bring Me the Horizon.

What is the longest you have ever spent on creating a cosplay?

I'm my own worst enemy with finishing a cosplay 100% to the end but I spent a good while on my take of Aurelion Sol.

Who is your favorite LoL champion to play as? What about most hated champ to play against?

My most played champion is Ahri, though I recently picked up Seraphine and her ult is really fun. I absolutely despise Nautilus he is the WORST to play against. What is that hook range?!

Outside of video games and cosplay, what are some of your other hobbies?

I stream on Twitch if that counts and before lockdown I used to go bouldering quite a bit, but I lost all my strength over 2020 sadly.

Where are you from?

I'm from Florida.

When did you start cosplaying?

In the summer of 2014.

How did you first become interested in cosplay?

I was introduced to it by some friends in college but I always loved dressing up as a kid.

What are some characters that you have cosplayed?

Oh so many but to name a few, Sonic the Hedgehog, Ziggs from League of Legends, Diane from Seven Deadly Sins, Tina from Bob's Burgers, Mizore from Rosario + Vampire, Misty from Pokémon, Deku from My Hero Academia, and Raven from Teen Titans.

What are your plans for your next cosplay?

Velma from Scooby-Doo and Cinnamon from Nekopara.

Do you have a favorite LoL champ?

I do, it's Soraka! She was the first champ I bought and fell in love with, I love everything about her look and story!

Do you have any cosplay pet peeves?

Unbrushed/tangled wigs haha.

What is the largest convention you have been to?

That would definitely be Dragon Con, it was crazy!

Any tips for newer cosplayers?

Just have fun! Don't put pressure on yourself to be perfect unless you are competing and even then it should still be fun, not work!

Favorite movie? Video game? TV show? Band?

So hard to pick but if I had to, The Lion King original animated version, Final Fantasy X, Fairy Tail if anime counts as a TV show if not then The Curse of Oak Island, haha, and Queen is definitely my
favorite band!

Tell me about some of your tattoos.

I have like 18 now including some Egyptian tats and most of my new ones are nerdy like Yoshi, Fairy Tail and the element symbols from Avatar the Last Airbender.

Outside of cosplay and video games, what are some of your other hobbies?

I watch A LOT of anime lol, but most of my hobbies are centered around cosplay, going to conventions, gaming with friends, etc.

Q&A Interview with Vanity Insanity Cosplay

Where are you from?

I am from Sunny South Africa, first generation born. I grew up in the South of Johannesburg.

When did you start cosplaying?

I started Cosplaying officially in 2015. I made my very first costume for a local anime shop called Animeworx. It was for a competition, we had to make the mascot Eri. I had a store card with the limited-edition blue version of her and I decided to make that version. I had no idea how to make a costume so I just hand-sewed everything! I would LOVE to actually remake the costume someday soon. The artist who drew the mascot was the talented Warren Louw.

How did you first become interested in cosplay?

I remember seeing Yuna from Final Fantasy X when I was younger, and really wanting her little hair piece. At first it was just the hair piece but I grew to love the whole outfit and I became hooked on the idea of cosplay when I saw some people actually dress up like her. Once I had the opportunity, I got a local seamstress to make me a Super Sonico outfit and I went to my very first convention in October 2014! It was just the taste I needed to push me to actually trying the cosplay thing in early 2015.

What are some characters you have cosplayed?

Miss Fortune – League of Legends

 Ahri – League of Legends

D.Va – Overwatch

Mercy – Overwatch

Rangiku Matsumoto – Bleach

Nelliel Tu – Bleach

Deanerys Targaryen – Game of Thrones

Do you have any future cosplay plans?

I hope to do a huge cosplay build soon. That is all I can say for now.

What is your favorite part of cosplaying?

The catfishing. Ahaha! No, I just Like the art of it as a whole, from the makeup to the poses to the crafting and figuring out how to make the physics somehow work in the real world. I can’t even begin to describe all off the things I love about it.

Favorite movie? Video game? TV show? Band?

Pfft. I don’t have a single favorite but I can name a few;

Movies: Year One, Almost Famous, Mean Girls, Inglourious Basterds, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Voices, Tucker and Dale vs Evil.

Video Game? PUBG, Dead by Daylight, Tenchu, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, League of Legends, VR Chat.

Bands (These are bands and solo artists) Mr.Kitty, Virga Music Project, My Chemical Romance, Placebo, Bad Omens, Bring me the Horizon, Joji, Conan Gray, Kavinsky, Lil Peep, Øfdream, Lana Del Rey, Selena Gomez, The Weeknd, Ava Max, Falling in Reverse,  There are too many man.

What is the cosplay scene like in South Africa? What's the biggest Convention there each year?

Biggest convention is probably Comic Con Africa. The cosplay scene is pretty small but it's growing very quickly!

What cosplay would you say took the MOST time to create and how long was it?

Probably 2B? Figuring out how to put everything together and also having the worst fabric to paint on was by my poor judgment. Ahaha!

What is a cosplay pet peeve of yours?

Messy wigs & hot glued everything! agh X_X

Another one is people making sloppy cosplays then getting angry for not getting as much recognition as they hoped, THEN getting mad at other cosplayers who spent time and effort on their cosplays. They then proceed to be salty and ugly towards them. Like, maybe if they ran their sewing machines as much as they ran their mouths they wouldn't have so much to complain about? That's my 2c salt for the day, you are welcome. XD

Oh, another one is people dictating who can wear what and gatekeeping cosplays. Cosplay is for everyone and I'm near to damn sure the majority of cosplayers are not going to spend hours, time and money trying to offend another race. Cultural appreciation is so beautiful and people should stop saying everything is cultural appropriation because we should be able to celebrate our differences and come together and grow a better understanding of each other's cultures. Even with something as simple as sewing a kimono, for example.

You learn how they used to be made, what fabrics were worn. Then you find out different sleeves mean different things and you get so into the history behind the kimono and then the culture and you just understand and appreciate the knowledge you gain along the way.

Sso tell me, HOW IS THAT NOT A POSITIVE THING?! <3 There are way bigger issues in the world they could tackle. If I cosplay something it's because I love the design or character, I can guarantee you I am not racist for doing so.

Outside of video games and cosplay, what are some of your other hobbies?

My other hobbies include traveling (when I can) binge watching stuff, making things or trying to learn something new.
