SuicideGirl Gamer of the Month: Samihain

Why did you choose the name 'Samihain'?

I chose the name because I am born on October 31st, and someone had already taken Samhain, so I added an "I" to make it Samihain.

How long have you been a part of the SuicideGirls community?

About three years.

Where are you from?

I am from the Southwestern United States.

What first got you interested in video games?

My parents bought me a Super Nintendo as a child and it started there. I believe I was about six years old. My first games were Super Mario Bros. and Super Ghouls and Ghosts.

What are you playing currently?

I am on my second playthrough of  Dragon Age: Inquisition, going for a trophy for a playthrough on Hard. I also need to finish the expansions of The Witcher 3.

Favorite video game? Movie? TV show? Band?

My favorite video game is probably The Witcher 3, but I also love all things Pokémon. For movie, I'd def have to go with The Fifth Element. TV Show would be The X Files. Band is super hard, but either Amon Amarth or the Foo Fighters. When I was younger I was also obsessed with Blink 182.

If you could own one Pokémon in real life which would it be and why?

Oh that is tough! I'd probably say Leafeon. I've always been fond of grass type Pokémon, and it's so cute!

Have you seen the newest season of The Witcher on Netflix?

Yes! I really like the show, and especially how good Henry Cavill portrays Geralt. I am not a huge fan of the actress they chose as Yennefer, but I think it's because she isn't quite bitchy enough to be Yennefer. I have also read all of the books by Andrzej Sapkowski.

Do you cosplay?

I do! I've been cosplaying since 2011, and my first cosplay was Cammy from Street Fighter 2. I used to go by the cosplay name of Katybear, and at one time had a fairly decent following. You can still Google that name and find lots of old convention photos and interviews from back then. I took a few years off starting around 2015, but I'm getting back into it again. I used to make all of my cosplays, but along with a full time job it became a lot, which is why I decided to take a break. I was missing it by 2020, so I started doing charity events dressed as various superheroes (mostly events for underprivileged children).

I am going to start working on more cosplay sets for SuicideGirls too, and I actually have one that just went live on the site on January 17th. (Lucoa from Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid). I made the horns and painted the hat, and am very happy with how it turned out. I have so many fun ideas, and am feeling very inspired again!

How does cosplay compare with other types of modeling?

It's definitely different from regular modeling. When I am cosplaying I am trying to capture the character's personality, which varies. When I model regularly it's my own personality.

As someone that's cosplayed for awhile, do you have any cosplay-related pet peeves or things about the hobby that have frustrated you?

For me I hate it when someone will comment on a post or message me and start quizzing me like they think I am a "fake geek girl." It's really annoying when this happens because although it is trendy now, it wasn't when I started. I was also teased a lot and bullied when I was younger for being a nerd, and I don't know why someone would think I would fake that. I always try to cosplay as characters I genuinely like and not just what is trendy. I feel it's more genuine that way. I also hate it when someone claims they made their cosplay when they didn't. I've even done a commission for someone and they later were trying to claim they made it. That was not cool at all...

What is one character you would love to cosplay if time / money were no issue for the costume?

A blood elf rogue from World of Warcraft. I used to play that game avidly, and only stopped because it started consuming all my free time.

Tell me a little bit about your tattoos.

I used to have small stars on my chest, and I had them covered by my ravens. They are Huginn and Muninn. I love Norse Mythology. I also have Jörmungandr on my thigh. I have a quote from one of my favorite books, The Handmaid's Tale, on my forearm. It says "Nolite Te Bastardes Carborundorum" and in the book it's supposed to be Latin for "Don't let the bastards grind you down." I have an evil eye on my upper back. I have a small heart on my hip that I got on my 18th birthday. And I also have the start of a half sleeve on my upper arm that is birthday themed. It has my birth flower, which is a Marigold, and some Halloween stuff (like a Jack-o-lantern, spider webs, and bats). I plan to get more, too!

Outside of games and modeling, what are some of your other hobbies?

I love sewing (mostly cosplays), gardening, reading, and horseback riding. I used to ride competitively, and I haven't had a chance to ride in years.
