Q&A Interview with Angel Kaoru

Where are you from?

Ecuador.

How long have you been cosplaying?

13 years.

How did you first become interested in cosplaying?

I have loved wearing costumes and Halloween since I was little. I've also loved anime for a long time as well. Cosplaying was just an excuse to put a lot of costumes all the time whether or not it was Halloween.

What are some characters you have cosplayed?

Bayonetta 1 and 2, Gamora, Black Widow, Mystique, Mt Lady, Jessica Rabbit, Poison Ivy, Mileena (MK), Dark Magician Girl, and Joker.

Any future plans for cosplays?

Totally! One of my dream cosplays is Tyrande from World of Warcraft. I'll also be doing more Marvel superheroes and villains.

Favorite movie? Video game? TV show? Band?

I love animated movies. My favorite is Inside Out. Favorite video games are Bayonetta and Super Smash Bros. Favorite TV show is How I Met Your Mother. And favorite band is Big Bang.

What are some of your hobbies outside of cosplay?

Photography, photo editing, and music. I own a photo business in my country so most of my cosplay photos are produced by me and a co-worker. I'm still trying to come back to music. I was raised with music so I hope I can come back soon.

You mentioned you were a big anime fan. What are some of your favorites in that regard?

Totally! I love shonen and action anime like Hunter X Hunter; that's one of my favorites. Also Yu Yu Hakusho. Although I also love crazy and bizarre anime like Gurren Lagann, Darling in the Franxx, and FLCL. If you noticed, most of them are from the same studio creator, Gainax and Trigger.

Are you playing any video games currently? If so, which ones?

Yes. Actually I'm playing Bayonetta 1 and Mortal Kombat 11.

What would you say is the most difficult part about being a cosplayer?

Maybe the lack of support in some countries like mine. It's so hard to get a sponsor or someone interested in your job. You are rarely promoted. But you also need that financial support to make cosplays so it's hard sometimes.

Q&A Interview with Khymichi

Where are you from?

I am from Penang, Malaysia.

What is the cosplay community like in Malaysia? Is it large? Small?

I would say its pretty large now. Comic Fiesta seems to have more and more cosplayers every year.

When did you first start cosplaying?

I started during my first year of university in Singapore around 2008. We didn't have cosplay events on my island at the time, so I was really excited to see Singapore had one. I made my first costume and attended.

How did you first become interested in cosplay?

When I was 14, my house finally had internet installed. I was already into anime. When I was browsing for anime and manga, I came across cosplay pictures. It was a team of Final Fantasy cosers. From there I got interested in the hobby.

What are some characters you have cosplayed?

So many. Recent coses are Mulan from Wreck it Ralph 2, Sonico, Kanroji Mitsuri from Kimetsu no Yaiba, High Elf from Goblin Slayer, Attila the (san)ta from FGO and Tempest Janna from League of Legends. I have a lot more but its years worth of coses to list.

Any future plans for characters?

I have a lot! Haha. Plans are usually made with friends or feels. Each character is different so it really depends on who I am cosing and when to see what I plan for them.

What is your favorite part of cosplay?

Hanging out with my friends and seeing the reactions I get of my coses. Like when I cosplayed Princess Serenity at Comiket a couple years ago, this girl cried from happiness at seeing my friend and I. It was a bit of a shock but she was really sweet.

What about the hardest part?

Arranging timings with my friends. We are all working and travelling adults, so getting the timings to match is a bit of an ordeal. My recent Kimetsu No Yaiba shoot took about three months before we could settle on a date.

Are you planning on attending any cons this year?

I'm aiming for comiket but I'll see how it goes.

What is the farthest you have traveled for cosplay?

From Dubai maybe it's Comiket two years ago because it's almost 11 hours flight away.  But from Malaysia maybe a small con in Birmingham. I did go to Perth once for my Life is Strange photoshoot as well.

What sets you apart from other cosplayers?

I am not sure actually. Besides my friends, I am not that involved in the who is who in the cosplay scene. So I cannot compare what could make me stand out. I'm more of a hobbyist but I do want to try making and selling a photobook like most cosers do.

Favorite movie? Video game? TV show? Band?

Gosh, I have a lot that I like but favorite is a bit hard. I re-watch loads of movies so I can't say I have a fav in that. Video games, I always loved Rule of Rose. I have replayed that a ton of times with my sisters on the PS2. TV show... does Adventure Time count? Bands I have a lot as well. I am an avid music fan across a lot of genres. Right now, I wanna see Kenshi Yonezu, Florence and the Machine, and Marina and the Diamonds live if I can.

Tell me something about yourself that nobody knows.

I am not sure what people know or don't know about me actually. However, I think people need to

know I can't drink milk. I do tell people this but they always forget and try to give me something with drinkable milk in it. One time I was at an event and had a bit of this chocolate drink from a friend and I ended up vomiting the rest of the event. I can have yogurt and cheese but not excessively.
