Q&A Interview with Khymichi

Where are you from?

I am from Penang, Malaysia.

What is the cosplay community like in Malaysia? Is it large? Small?

I would say its pretty large now. Comic Fiesta seems to have more and more cosplayers every year.

When did you first start cosplaying?

I started during my first year of university in Singapore around 2008. We didn't have cosplay events on my island at the time, so I was really excited to see Singapore had one. I made my first costume and attended.

How did you first become interested in cosplay?

When I was 14, my house finally had internet installed. I was already into anime. When I was browsing for anime and manga, I came across cosplay pictures. It was a team of Final Fantasy cosers. From there I got interested in the hobby.

What are some characters you have cosplayed?

So many. Recent coses are Mulan from Wreck it Ralph 2, Sonico, Kanroji Mitsuri from Kimetsu no Yaiba, High Elf from Goblin Slayer, Attila the (san)ta from FGO and Tempest Janna from League of Legends. I have a lot more but its years worth of coses to list.

Any future plans for characters?

I have a lot! Haha. Plans are usually made with friends or feels. Each character is different so it really depends on who I am cosing and when to see what I plan for them.

What is your favorite part of cosplay?

Hanging out with my friends and seeing the reactions I get of my coses. Like when I cosplayed Princess Serenity at Comiket a couple years ago, this girl cried from happiness at seeing my friend and I. It was a bit of a shock but she was really sweet.

What about the hardest part?

Arranging timings with my friends. We are all working and travelling adults, so getting the timings to match is a bit of an ordeal. My recent Kimetsu No Yaiba shoot took about three months before we could settle on a date.

Are you planning on attending any cons this year?

I'm aiming for comiket but I'll see how it goes.

What is the farthest you have traveled for cosplay?

From Dubai maybe it's Comiket two years ago because it's almost 11 hours flight away.  But from Malaysia maybe a small con in Birmingham. I did go to Perth once for my Life is Strange photoshoot as well.

What sets you apart from other cosplayers?

I am not sure actually. Besides my friends, I am not that involved in the who is who in the cosplay scene. So I cannot compare what could make me stand out. I'm more of a hobbyist but I do want to try making and selling a photobook like most cosers do.

Favorite movie? Video game? TV show? Band?

Gosh, I have a lot that I like but favorite is a bit hard. I re-watch loads of movies so I can't say I have a fav in that. Video games, I always loved Rule of Rose. I have replayed that a ton of times with my sisters on the PS2. TV show... does Adventure Time count? Bands I have a lot as well. I am an avid music fan across a lot of genres. Right now, I wanna see Kenshi Yonezu, Florence and the Machine, and Marina and the Diamonds live if I can.

Tell me something about yourself that nobody knows.

I am not sure what people know or don't know about me actually. However, I think people need to

know I can't drink milk. I do tell people this but they always forget and try to give me something with drinkable milk in it. One time I was at an event and had a bit of this chocolate drink from a friend and I ended up vomiting the rest of the event. I can have yogurt and cheese but not excessively.

Q&A Interview with Sweet Angel Cosplay

Where are you from?

I'm from Italy!

How long have you been cosplaying?

I started around the end of 2008 in a very little event in my free time. There were fewer than 15 cosplayers and my first costume was Tifa from Final Fantasy VII.

How did you first become interested in cosplaying?

I think it was due to my interest in video games and anime. I liked the idea of being creative and making a costume inspired by my favorite characters.

What are some characters you have cosplayed?

Oh, the list is quite long! I can tell you some of my favorites, but you can find the full list on my website: Yoko Littner from TTGL, Holo from Spice and Wolf, Yuna and Rikku from Final Fantasy, Kairi from Kingdom Hearts, Jibril from No Game No Life, Rena from Elsword, Wizard from Diablo, and Kirin from Monster Hunter.

Any future plans for cosplays?

I just finished Riven from League of Legends and I'm working on Akali from the same game.

Favorite movie? Video game? TV show? Band?

Is it bad to have no favorite film/TV show/music? I can tell you my favorite video game for sure is Final Fantasy X.

Have you gotten the new FFVII remake yet? What do you think about remakes of older games in general? Good idea or ruins the nostalgia?

Unfortunately I still have to buy and play the game. Two reasons mainly: I still have to finish other titles and I'm really busy with my daily routine. I should also buy a bigger monitor because with mine it's a pain every time. In any case, I hope to play it soon and avoid spoilers until that moment! I'm more for new games and not for remakes, but sometimes it's not a bad idea. Cloud/Tifa/Aerith in HD are a way better now than the pixels of the past. Definitely a pleasure for the eyes!

From start to finish how long does it take you to create a cosplay from scratch on average? What's the longest one has ever taken?

I'm very slow in making cosplays. Usually an average costume takes several months. I spend many hours on the research of materials, on the project, on the test, and then on the real creation. Small example: I'm working on Akali now and the light green piece on her legs has some brown cords. Only to hand-sew the brown parts together takes me six plus another six hours, and it's just a small detail (you can see here).

I'm a perfectionist so I probably spend hours and hours on things that nobody will even notice, but it's the way I like to cosplay!

In your opinion, what is the most important skill for someone just starting out in the hobby to develop first to get the most out of the cosplaying experience in the long term?

I think the best "skill" is to always have fun and enjoy what you do! In particular cosplaying for you is a hobby so you have to do what makes you happy, and this could be different from another cosplayer so don't compare yourself too much to your friends or your idols. Do what makes you happy!

What are some of your hobbies outside of cosplay?

Considering cosplay takes most of my time since I make my own costumes/prop/wigs and I organize many shootings and attend many events, the remaining space is not enough to do a lot in my free time.

I do rock climbing (bouldering in particular) and I really love to travel both in cities and summer places. I also enjoy trekking and skiing. During this quarantine, I unfortunately can't do any of them so I focus on home workouts.
