Q&A Interview with SynergyCraft Cosplay

Where are you from?

I am from Omaha, Nebraska.

When did you first start cosplaying?

I made my first cosplay in 2006, which was Sasuke Uchiha from Naruto.

How did you first become interested in cosplay?

My two best friends wanted to go to AnimeIowa and we were absolutely obsessed with Naruto at the time. We knew about cosplay just from how much time we spent on the internet. It looked like a ton of fun, so we all got together and made cosplays for the convention.

What are some characters you have cosplayed?

I've made over 30 cosplays, but my favorite characters have been Mei (Overwatch), Jaina Proudmoore (World of Warcraft), Arya Stark (Game of Thrones), Orphea (Heroes of the Storm), Star Guardian Poppy and Pizza Delivery Sivir (both from League of Legends).

Any future plans for characters?

I have tons of future cosplay plans! In 2020 I'll be working on Elphelt Valentine, Tyreen Calypso, and an armored Venusaur gijinka.

What is your favorite part of cosplay?

I am extremely passionate about the craftsmanship side of cosplay! As a cosplayer who competes at the Master skill level in cosplay contests, I challenge myself to make every garment, accessory, and prop from scratch whenever I can.

What about the hardest part?

For me, the hardest part of cosplay would have to be making repairs to damaged pieces after a convention - I just want to move onto the next project ASAP instead!

Favorite movie? Video game? TV show? Band?

Movie - Kung Pow! Enter the Fist

Video game - World of Warcraft

TV show - Game of Thrones

Band - Coheed & Cambria

Are you planning on going to any cons this year? (this interview was pre-lockdowns)

Yes I am! I will be at Naka-Kon, Anime St. Louis, Anime Central, and Anime Nebraskon for sure. I'm trying to go to as many as I can this year!

Out of all of your cosplays, which one took the longest/most effort?

Orphea took me a whopping 380 hours to complete within just four months.

What is the farthest you have ever traveled to cosplay?

A few years ago I traveled eight hours to Denver, CO for NanDesuKan. I usually stick around the MidWest because travelling with large props can be very difficult and stressful. But I would love to compete at BlizzCon in Anaheim, CA one day!

Do you have any tips for someone just beginning in cosplay of noob mistakes they could avoid early on when working on creating costumes? Maybe a better way to do something you have learned over the years?

My biggest tip is one that is considered a rule of thumb whether you're working with fabric, foam, or any other material - measure twice, cut once! Another good one is to always check the chemical interactions between your glue and the material you intend to use it on. Some glues will melt foam or create heat (and subsequently, fire) when put on certain plastics.

For newbies, one of the trickiest pieces to make can be gloves. You will save yourself a ton of stress and trouble by making sure you use 4 way stretch fabric.

Tell me something about yourself that nobody knows.

I LOVE watching absolutely garbage-tier reality tv shows on TLC. It's one of the few things that actually helps me relax!

Where can fans find more of you?
