SuicideGirl Gamer of the Month: Sul (Hopeful)

Why did you choose the name "Sul"?

I choose the name Sul (S-oul) as a light parallel to the Roman Sun God “Sol” as I naturally consider myself an optimist and hard-working individual. I am a big fan of various mythologies and legends throughout time and wanted to pay homage to that also.

How long have you been a part of the SuicideGirls community?

I joined the site in the fall of 2019, I’ve always dreamed of being apart of the community!

Where are you from?

I am born and raised in NY.

What first got you interested in video games?

I had been gaming since I can remember! Being born at the beginning of the tech era was perfect for me as I loved the idea of “escapism.” My oldest sibling had introduced me to PC gaming at a young age and I began playing little games whenever I could (Aveyond, Mario, SimsCity, etc.). I eventually found my way to different consoles and genres of games over the years!

What are some characters that you have cosplayed?

Luckily I have been able to cosplay a lot of my favorite characters over the years, however a few that I really loved were Starfire, Itachi Uchiha &  Fionna from Adventure Time!

Any plans for future cosplays?

I actually have tons of upcoming cosplay plans, however I like to keep it a secret!

What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to cosplay?

I don't believe I have one entirely, however I sometimes wish people would allow others to cosplay how they want too. Such as not gatekeeping a specific character to a specific demographic based on race, gender, lewd or sfw, etc.

What do you find is the most challenging part of doing cosplay?

I think the most "challenging" part about cosplay would be picking a character out of so many options! Between anime, video games, pop culture there are so many great personalities and looks to portray!

Favorite video game? Movie? TV show? Band?

Video Game - Skyrim

Movie - Dawn of the Dead

TV Show - GOT

Band - Wallows

Tell me about your different tattoos.

I feel as though I have lost count of how many I have now however a good way to sum up the overall aesthetic I tend to gravitate towards is ornamental and nature-based! I also have a few spiritual pieces here and there as well. I am a big believer that tattoos can just be a way to carry around beautiful pieces of art with you and or have a deeper meaning.

What are some of your other hobbies?

A few other hobbies I enjoy would be Hula-Hooping (Flow-arts), Painting, Yoga, and Botany.

Q&A Interview with Melanie's Muses

Where are you from?

I am originally from Rochester, England but I moved to Rochester, New York to be with my husband about 20 years ago.

How long have you been cosplaying?

My first proper cosplay was probably for the #DressLikeADemon contest in 2016 that Lesley-Ann Brandt hosted to promote Lucifer and then I won a signed picture from her. Everything escalated from there.

How did you first become interested in cosplay?

I've always been fascinated with dressing up but with vlogging, and then after the Lucifer contest it kind of took on a life of its own. I've always been a bit different and cosplay really lets you explore that.

What are some characters you have cosplayed?

Maze from Lucifer, River Song from Doctor Who, The "Posessed" Linda from Witchboard (which is one of my personal favorites), Stahma Tarr from the TV show Defiance, Several of the characters from the new Sandman series on Netflix, Keeley Jones from Ted Lasso .... honestly there are so many, and I take requests from my fans so LOTS have stemmed from there. I showcase new ones almost every Sunday on my Melanie's Muses Facebook live show!

What are some of your future cosplay plans?

I am debuting a new one at FC3 which I am really excited about. It's the first one that I have had custom armor made for and relates to a new book series from Author Susan Harris. I am also working on a fan-requested Pam from True Blood (when she is cursed and half rotting).

What is the most time consuming part of creating a cosplay?

The most time consuming part is usually deciding how I want to interpret them if it’s a specific person, or what look I’m going for if it’s an original character.  Things also often then to change as I start working on them too. I usually try and pick a vibe, or with characters what I connect with about them, and then go from there.

What is your biggest cosplay pet peeve?

When people make negative comments about how the characters might not exactly match the original. If you love a character then you should go for it and interpret it YOUR way. If people don't like it they should mind their own business. Cosplay is an escape and everyone should be welcome to enjoy it!

Favorite movie? Video game? TV show? Band?

Movie -  True Romance  Video Game - Bloody Roar 3  TV Show - Salem   Band - HIM

Outside of cosplay, what are some of your other hobbies?

Reading, I watch a TON of TV and weird obscure movies. Oh and collecting Funko Pops - they are literally taking over the house at this point!
